Setting the bar
“I felt nervous knowing it was the first meet of the season, also knowing I was setting the bar going forward into the season,” senior Shay Bamesberger said. On March 18th the NPHS track team went to UNK for their first meet of the season. “I was nervous but confident, knowing what I was going into helped a lot,” sophomore Kathy Mathieu said. Mathieu ran the 55-meter and the 200-meter. In the 55-meter she got first in the preliminary round then placed sixth in the final round with a time of 7.83 seconds. In the 200-meter she got fourth with a time of 29 seconds flat. Senior Madison Raska got fourth in the high jump clearing 4’8’’. She was supposed to run the 55-meter and long jump to but she didn’t get to due to an ankle injury she was not able to compete in the 55-meter or the long jump. “This took a pretty big toll on my emotions because hoping to medal in long jump and the 55 [meter],” Raska said “Ever since season started I was feeling pretty confident about going into the first meet at UNK, practices were going really well for me and I was at the spot I intended to be in for it being the beginning of the season. ” Coach Mike McGuire was also impressed with how the season started. “Overall, pretty happy. But not satisfied, we can get better in all areas,” Mcguire said “I thought we got off to a good start. Trevon Weaver got us rolling with a 22’4’’ on his first jump and the team took off from there.” Junior Trevon Weavor got first in the long jump and the 55-meter dash. His 55-meter time was 6.62 seconds. “I felt good going in. Seeing as though I won the 55 last year it gave me a sense of confidence going into the race,” Weavor said. Weavor has a big goal he is going to try to acconplish. “My main goal for the season is to win state in something,” Weavor said. The track team had there McCook duel cancelled due to bad weather on Thursday, March 24. McGuire wasn’t that happy with the call of cancelling it. McGuire said “If it was me I would have waited till about 1 o’clock to make the call. Most of the snow was melted by then” The track teams next meet is the Buffalo Bill meet this Saturday April 2, here at the NPHS track.

I really enjoyed this article because I like to see what goes through their mind before their first meet. I also really like how they involved several people so the article is less about one person and more about the sport.
