Every year, thousands of high school athletes are selected to take their athletic ability to the next level. There are many steps to take to get to a place of being recruited. Here are some tips to get you to the same spot.

1. Create a list of schools you would like to attend.

  • Start with a wide range of schools and narrow it by academic, level of competition, and location.
  • Fewer schools on your list, the smaller your chances are of getting recruited.
  • Remember that each level has its own requirements for ability.

2. Get the emails for all the coaches on your list.

  • Make sure your emails are very professional and include an athletic resume, include academic accomplishments (GPA, class rank, etc.), what makes you interested in their program.
  • Try adding a video of you playing or running drills to show them things that you do well.

3. Start communicating with coaches.

  • If you do not hear from coaches after a couple weeks try a different way of reaching out to them, like a phone call.
  • Respond to every coach that replies to your email.
  • Always have informed questions to ask them and tell them why you are interested.
  • If a coach arranges a phone call with you, make sure you prepare for it. Learn a lot about the school and previous seasons so you can explain why you would be a good fit.
  • DO NOT ignore any emails. Even if you think you don’t want to be at that school that might be the only school who will want to take you on as an athlete.

4. Attend camps and showcasing events.

  • Don’t rely on being discovered at a showcase or a camp, because most coaches are there to watch athletes who they have already been in contact with.
  • If a coach talks to you at the camps make sure you keep in contact with them so they stay interested.

5. Get familiar with collegiate rules and regulation.

  • Every step of being recruited has specific rules based on division and grade.
  • Get familiar with all the requirement rules that you have to follow

6. Get familiar with academic requirements.

  • Register with NCAA and NAIA eligibility centers so you can be eligible for athletic scholarships.
  • Research what classes are required for you to be eligible.
  • Take the required tests and meet the the required scores.
