Jake’s Take on Open Mic Night

Bryce Lee

Former North Platte High School student Koty DeCent is a regular at The Espresso Shoppe’s open mic night. He usually performs covers of songs from alternative bands, but he also sings his own original songs sometimes. “My motivation would be the audience. Just seeing their faces gets me pumped to perform,” said DeCent.

Are you looking for a cheap way to spend your evening? The Espresso Shoppe by Caravan hosts an open mic night every second and fourth Friday of each month.

At an open mic night, you will find all sorts of people, ranging from young adults to senior citizens. Anyone who chooses to do so can perform anything of their choosing. Some like to sing, play instruments, recite poetry, or simply tell stories.

Personally, I enjoyed open mic night because the environment was great. Out of the many acts that performed, my favorites were the musical acts, because honestly, there weren’t many other acts. The one speech performance was great, however, there was not any other performances to compare it to.

There is no entry fee and best of all, anyone can get on stage. While watching people perform, they offer drip drinks, baked goods, and sodas. This event is fun whether you’re there to support a friend or perform on stage. So, next time you think there isn’t anything to do in North Platte, give open mic night a shot. My rating is eight microphones out of 10.
