Golfing for greatness
The North Platte High School boy’s golf team is doing very well and is having quite a bit of success this year. The team has a good group of golfers working together, with two going on to play at the collegiate level next year. Senior Kort Steele led the team to a second place finish at GNAC, and the season coming to a close, there is one thing on everyone’s mind: State. With the way the Dawgs have been getting after it, they are feeling good after going to districts. The boys district play is being held right here in North Platte. “We play it almost everyday, so we know where the places to miss are. We know the speed and shape of the greens a lot better than others. We also know what club to hit from almost every spot on the course because we’ve played it so much.” junior Kade Wroot said. In order to qualify for State, the boys will have to do well at the district meet on May 15.
The team really has been able to bond together this year though. “We’ve been playing really well, we’ve shown what we can accomplish, and this gives us a chance to show what we’re made of,” said Junior Chesney Tatman. Wroot said that one of the team’s biggest advantages is their cosistent scores, “We have the ability to be gritty and we can scrape together a good score even if we aren’t hitting the ball very well. And we all keep getting better as the season goes on.” The team is having one of their most successful years having won six meets so far. “Everyone wants to play well for state, and make state, but I think that we’ll be a better team this year than we were last year, we have four of our varsity players coming back.” Tatman said.
Overall, the team is just brimming with confidence, “I’m looking forward to going out to a course we know, and competing to the best of my abilities with my team,” said Wroot. Steele was especially enthusiastic about the prospect of districts. “We just have to go out and be focused. We have to make sure to not put too much of the pressure of being the number one seed on ourselves, and just go have some fun.”
