North Platte High School senior Shelby Steele got a silver medal at district FCCLA.
Steele will go to state in early April.
Family Community Career Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a mix between FFA, SkillUSA and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) but in Family Consumer Sciences (FCS).
“I’m pretty nervous, it’s my first time ever going solo to any convention like this,” Steele said, “‘I’ve never done this kind of activity before.”
North Platte hasn’t had a student in FCCLA in many years.
“This is my first year doing FCCLA,” said Elizabeth Odle, a teacher at NPHS.
FCCLA is different because it has more sewing and cooking skills.
Steele went to districts and is the first person from North Platte to go or even place.
“It was calm,” she said. “It was a lot of fun and I got to meet a lot of new people.”
Steele has a good support system and is motivated to improve.
“It just gives me hope to keep improving everyday and create something amazing,” Steele said.
North Platte does not have a chapter or a team that participates in FCCLA competitions.
“I’m really excited because North Platte doesn’t have a full chapter yet,” Odle said. “I’ve been able to walk with her along this journey and learn more about FCCLA.”
