The North Platte powerlifting team went to state on Jan. 26.

Senior Abigail Dimmit received first place in the 123 weight category in the girls division.

“It was just different, it was a different environment,” Dimmit said. “This year it was family and everybody supported you and it was just exciting and exhilarating.”

The students lift large amounts of weight.

“I lift a total of 555 pounds,” Dimmit said.

Junior Seth Penn complete a deadlift at the home powerlifting meet at NPHS on Feb. 3.

“I squat 465 and I can pause bench 295 and I can deadlift 500,” junior Seth Penn said. “A total of 1245 pounds.”

The three activities are squats, bench press and deadlift.

“Squats you are in a sitting position and driving up so it’s mostly legs, while bench is laying down so it’s mostly arms, and deadlift is a mix between back, arms and legs.” Dimmit said.

The high school didn’t have a set team under Arttie Parker put it together.

“The best part of my job is watching kids do what they thought they couldn’t,” Parker said.

Training is a big part of this sport because it helps with energy and being able to safely do their sport.

“Training is safe and strict when we are actually lifting,” Dimmit said. “We goof around a lot. A lot of singing goes on.”

North Platte hosted its first powerlifting dual on Feb. 3.

“The insane amount of support that we’ve gotten from Mr. Spotanski and Mr. Johnson really helped us.”

The team is excited to be able to perform in front of their family and friends.

“We’re using this as a learning experience to learn what we did well and what we didn’t do well,” Parker said.
