An early goodbye to Bulldog country
How to graduate in December
Out of the 276 students who received their diploma last year, 15% completed their graduation requirements prior to December 2017.
Early graduation is a process offered by the school that allows seniors to be able to finish their high school career by the end of the second term in December. Students who achieve 245 credits and pass certain subject areas along their senior level classes, are eligible to apply to graduate at term.
In the past, there was a lot of weight on proving students had plans after their early graduation. Now, there is less emphasis on their plans. Principal Scott Siegel explained that the reason they ask this question is because the school wants to have an overall view of the patterns of why students would want to graduate early, which also turns into a form of feedback that the school receives. “It really becomes a conversation about the opportunities we can give them in high school and how can we offer them in the best way possible. There might be something they’re looking for that we haven’t thought about,” Siegel said.
Even though most of the students could graduate early if they wanted to, according to Siegel, “most of them decide to stick around and have more of a high school experience.” Students that decide to end their high school career in December still have the option to participate in the graduation ceremony in May. “Whether you graduate early or not, you are still a part of this high school, and we want to see you there,” Siegel said.
Applications are due by the end of the first term, October 18th. “The earlier you turn the application, the better,” Siegel said.
