Seniors Drew Phillips, Max Hayes, Keifer Smitty, Jake Johnson, Zach Kring, Brycen Tophane, Jonathan Edwards, Jacob Tobey, and sophomore Callen Zurn pose in their unofficial homecoming theme hats.

For the second year in a row, a few NPHS seniors decided to unofficially change today’s homecoming theme from “Through the Years” to a traditional hat day. This Wednesday, while some students are dressed up anywhere from babies to the elderly, others are just wearing their favorite hats.

“The main reason was because the first two days this week were a lot better [themes] than last year, but today people mainly didn’t want to have to go out and actually buy a costume,” said senior Drew Phillips. He thinks it helps school spirit. “The main reason I did it was just to get more people involved,” he said. Phillips didn’t come up with the idea alone. “Last night, everyone said they didn’t know what to wear or just weren’t going to do it because it was too hard. A few guys asked me to tweet something out and change the theme again,” said Phillips. He said that a hat day is also a relatively easy theme to follow.

“This is the only week of the year that you can wear hats, and everyone likes to wear hats or has one laying around, so why not a hat day?” he said.

Even though some thinks it adds to spirit, others feel as though all it does is divide our school.  Senior cheerleader Katy Greene feels as though it splits the school into the people who want to wear hats versus the people who want to stick with the theme. “I think they should participate in our themes… and if they didn’t know what to wear they should have asked any of [the cheerleaders] for ideas,” she said.

The cheerleaders think it’s hard to satisfy everybody. “If we had done something simple then they would’ve been mad and told us to do something more extra,” said junior cheerleader Mia Dugan.  She also thinks that the boys are just doing it for attention and to make people laugh. However, she doesn’t think it’s that big of an issue. “I honestly don’t think it’s a huge deal, but I’m a cheerleader so I’m supposed to,” she said.

Greene says she feels the division in unity goes against the spirit of Homecoming. “I feel like they should just stick with the themes we set because Homecoming week is about getting together as a school and having fun, and them breaking off and doing their own thing kind of goes against that,” she said.

Phillips said his last intention was to make people think he was being disrespectful. “I’m not trying to be disrespectful or a jerk to the cheerleaders, I think they did a great job [this year],” he said. “I just wanted to get more people involved.”
