The pleasant surprise of Notre Dame
I went to a musical based on The Hunchback of Notre Dame which lasted from March 3-5. The production took place in the North Platte High School Performing Arts Center.
The performances were, for the most part, very well done. Many were simply incredible by high school standards. The only lackluster parts were all very minor, and didn’t last long. The set never changed, meaning you had a single visual for the entirety of the production. This was fine, however, as the set was quite beautiful and immense. The two storied design of it really added a lot, and was likely the reason the show felt bigger than most past productions. They definitely made the absolute most with the relatively small area of the stage.
The music was marvelous, there were no problems with it. I’m happy to say one of my favorite songs, Hellfire, was performed spectacularly. I thought it sounded wonderful, and at times, even powerful. Unfortunately, I noticed the sound of the microphones was all over the place. Most of the time, it would be a perfect volume. Other times, it was too quiet to hear, or extremely loud. I occasionally saw people around me cringing from the noise. At one point, somebody appeared to have been breathing heavily into the microphone, causing an extremely annoying sound. However, it wasn’t a persistent problem and was fixed fairly quickly. Overall, I’d say the production was well worth the price of admission. Aside from a few minor hiccups, I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and can’t wait to see what is coming next.
I give the Hunchback of Notre Dame six bells out of ten.
(The joke of the rating is that it was supposed to be out of the number of bells actual Notre-Dame de Paris has. Unfortunately, it only has ten bells so the joke is essentially lost)
