Steele and Neal: Concordia Bound

Clay Stone, Managing Editor

How much do your scholarships cover?
Kort Steele: “At [National Association for Intercollegiate Athletes,], they don’t have an entire free ride scholarship, I received a pretty nice scholarship that paid for a nice sum of my tuition. Half of it was academic and half of it was sports so that was kind of cool.”
Jayden Neal: “My scholarship didn’t pay for a lot of my tuition, but I really wanted to play golf in college so I went to Concordia.”
Are you confident in the team this year?
KS: “For sure, I’m very confident in my team members, not even just varsity but also the next five best golfers. We have a very solid team this year, any of the top ten guys could play any given week.”
JN: “I would say I’m really confident, we have a lot of talent this year, a lot of good up and coming freshman and a lot of hope for our future.”
Why do you like to play golf?
KS: “It’s all of what you put into it, it’s all about all the time that you put in, you can’t really blame anyone else but yourself. Not saying that I do in other sports, but it’s kind of just one of those things when it’s all on you, and that’s what makes it fun.”
JN: “It’s calming, it’s one of the things that just gets you away from everything else.”
What most excites you about college golfing?
KS: “The new challenge, and the new start, in high school golf you run into some kids that are extremely into it, and maybe some other kids that are just doing it for fun. In college golf, they will all have the same mentality as I do, so that will bring a new competitive level to it.”
JN: “Mostly traveling out of state and the higher level of competition is what excites me.”
Are you prepared for the level of golf in college?
KS: “To a certain extent, I’m still in high school, Mr. Orcutt and high school golf has done a lot to prepare me for it, but I don’t think I would go as far to say I’m fully ready for it.”
JN: “I believe so, especially with all I’ve learned over the past few years on my knowledge of golf has prepared me.”
How have you improved in your high school golfing career?
KS: “I believe that growth in golf is a lot easier to see than growth in like soccer or football, because you are by yourself and you can physically see your scores improving. I started playing a lot when I was about 8 years old, and I’ve kind of just grown ever since, so I believe that I’ve grown.”
JN: “I’ve learned a lot from my coaches over the past few years and I think they’ve helped me improve and prepare.”
