Senior Trevon Weaver is here for the pie. Along with being a football player committed to the University of Wyoming, he’s got a massive sweet tooth. “My grandma makes an amazing Lemon Meringue.” Weaver rounds out his top five desserts with apple crisp, ice cream, cherry Jello salad, and fried ice cream from San Pedro’s.
His love of desserts off the field hasn’t slowed him down on the field; finishing his senior season with 12 sacks and 69 total tackles from the defensive end position.
That position will be changing for Weaver, just one of several adjustments he will have to make at the next level. He will be moving from the line to the secondary; likely playing outside linebacker for the Cowboys. “I only played linebacker for a little while in middle school, but there was a rule against rushing the quarterback, so I switched to end,” Weaver said.
The recruitment process wasn’t exactly a breeze, with a few different schools expressing interest. “I went to Wyoming for the Air Force game, and I had taken a visit there during the summer, and I really loved it, I knew if they offered me a walk-on spot that I would take it,” he said, “It’ll just be really cool to look back and say that I played Division I.” As a walk-on, he is not on scholarship, but hopes to play his way to one.
Wyoming took their time with the walk-on offer, though, opening the door for a full offer from Wayne State. He said that really made him think. “A couple of UNK coaches also came to my house to talk to me,” Weaver said. He acknowledges his mother for being his most solid support through the whole thing, “She just was always there, I could always talk to her about stuff. She would drive me to my visits and she paid for it all.”
Weaver credits his motivation and success to God. “I want to bring God into everything I do since he gave me everything.” His favorite verse, Jeremiah 29:11, says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
The long-term future lies uncertain at the moment, but Weaver has a plan in the event that football isn’t there for him after his senior season. “I’m going to major in business. I either want to own my own business or go into sports management.” About that business, Weaver has an idea so good, he won’t talk about it because he knows people would steal it.
Weaver describes himself as pretty cut and dried, at Arby’s he gets either the chicken tenders or the French dip sandwich. He enjoys watching Netflix, with Sherlock, the Office, and Family Guy as his favorites.
Weaver took advantage of the opportunity to tell his extended family of his commitment on Christmas Day. “I bought a bunch of Wyoming gear and wrapped it up and gave it to them, and then they opened it at the same time,” he said.
Weaver is listed at 6’2” and 205 lbs., and can run a 4.5 second forty yard dash with consistency, but there’s a lot more to him than just numbers. Online message boards of Wyoming fans lit up when he announced his intent to play for the Cowboys; with people throwing high praise his way, but Weaver couldn’t care less. “I don’t even read that stuff. It’s cool, but I don’t want it to affect me,” he said. That is Weaver, a humble kid, who has used his gifted athleticism to score an opportunity at the next level.
Weaver enjoys Laramie, because it’s smaller and it really feels like home. He’s talked some with a few of his future teammates, and is really excited to see what happens. “I think with the success [the team] had this year, it could be really good, we and Boise State are really the only teams outside of the Power Five that have a shot at a National Championship,” he said.
As Weaver takes on this next set of challenges, he looks to impress the Wyoming coaches enough for them to bring him on scholarship. “If they like what they see, they’ll move me up,” he said. His future may be a tad uncertain, but he has a solid foundation, and will assuredly be giving his all. Here’s to Trevon Weaver and his career at the University of Wyoming. Go Pokes!
