Weavin’ through the competition

Imagine yourself walking up to the starting line, consumed by adrenaline, yet still feeling a sense of peace. As you’re standing there, you remember how you’ve been preparing yourself for this moment. As soon as you hear the starter gun fire, you take off in a blur. For junior Trevon Weaver, this experience is something he’s gotten to know very well in his two-and-a-half years of high school track.
The journey of being a two-time state qualifying sprinter has not been easy. For Weaver, the pressure is definitely there. “The expectations are high, after qualifying twice, they [people] expect it now,” he said. However, along with pressure comes some joy. “Just being able to go out there and do what I do, just run as fast as I can,” said Weaver, “there’s a sense of freedom to it.”
When Weaver started track in the fifth grade, he soon realized it was something he was good at and passionate about. “A lot of people said I was fast, so I figured why not showcase it,” said Weaver. In his third track year, he’s come to realize just how much potential he has. With this being Jimmy Pack’s first year coaching Weaver, he had great things to say, “Trevon is an extremely hard worker. He’s put in a lot of time over the last two-and- a-half seasons. I think we’re going to see that hard work pay off as this season goes on.”
“This [track] is one of my favorite things I do in life. being able to sprint away gives you a sense of power and freedom that you can do anything because you’re just blazing away,” he said.
With districts coming up, Weaver is trying to make it to State a third time. “In track, [improvement] is just a matter of inches or seconds, between winning and losing,” he said. Pack is trying to help Weaver to continue at his peak level. While helping Weaver show his full potential Pack said, “Nothing is a guarantee, but one of Trevon’s personal goals is to earn a gold medal in something, whether that’s sprints, jumps, or relay. Selfishly, we would like to see him earn a medal in all his events.”
At the District track meet on Wednesday, May 11 at 1:00 p.m. it will be time to see Weaver can punch his ticket to the state meet for a third time.
