Sophomore Jesse Falkena adjusts the engine on the new, donated Volkswagen diesel engine.

For the first time ever, NPHS automotive students can now learn how to repair diesel engines. North Platte community College donated a Volkswagen diesel engine, transmission, and the front end of the Jetta car from the steering wheel forward to the industrial technology program on Dec. 8. Diesel Technology Instructor Steve Kramer, said, “The college had a few extra diesel assets that we could supply to the high school to help build a relation with the diesel technology program at the college.” Automotive Instructor William Kalblinger said it’s all cut away, so you can see all of the components. “The kids spend a lot of time working on it and looking at it,” he said. Most ag-based or transportation industry engines are diesel. Kalblinger said this gift will help partner with the tech college for better student training. “We need to have workers stay in our community to keep it strong,” he said.
